Notes from Open Source in European Healthcare at Porto

Mel McIntyre attended the OSS in European Healthcare in Porto Portugal Although there was the usual small attendance at the Open Source in European Healthcare workshop, the quality was good and the exercise probably worthwhile. My goal was to meet people interested in Open Source in Health, to see some projects and to demonstrate HealthAtlas.

Things or people of interest

  1. OSCAR by Dr David Chan from Hamilton Ontario - Electronic Health Record for Clinics - HL7 complient lab access - outbreak prediction  - maybe a complement for Vista - also, MyOscar, a method for individuals to maintain and share their own EHR - software built in Java I believe and available for download. Look  for MyOSCAR on UTube.
  2. Interesting initiative from David Chan - a Facebook (Social Network) for Druggists - comments about drugs from 'people you know'
  3. OpenClinica - bbaumann@akazaresearch.com - a system to manage clinical trials - seems to have a good user community, not sure about developer community. Seems to have a good business model. HL7 middleware - MURF - REST based api for integration.
  4. ClearVision - Norman Young - an open source PACS RIS system - build in .NET by a company in Toronto - one client to date (Joint Dept for Medical Imaging - 5 teaching hospitals ) - no user community but has held some developer workshops.
  5. Open eHealth - alexander.ihis@icw.de - an organisation promoting development and methodologies for OSS offerings in Health - could be a target for HealthAtlas - also a possibility to speak at an event
  6. Ricardo Correira - one of the organisers - gave me two references that may be of interest,

7.  MPower - a service for older people in Norway
